Craig Hagkull - Varsity Head Coach
The 2023-24 season marks Coach Hagkull's first year as Head Coach. He has been the skills coach for the UA Ice Bears since 2021-22.
Originally from Saint Paul, MN, he played high school hockey before moving on to play two seasons of Junior A for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL where he was fortunate to win a national championship his final year. After juniors, he was a four year letter winner for the University of Notre Dame where he graduated with a degree in marketing. Upon graduating he returned to Desmoine's where he worked for two years as an assistant coach for the Buccaneers. Craig brings a wealth of knowledge to our program and had extensive success coaching and all levels of youth hockey, including the US select 16 festival.
Craig works as a Regional Managing Director in group benefits for Principal Financial Group. He lives in Upper Arlington with his wife Molly and sons, Brady and Connor.
Jack Hoogeveen - Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Hoogeveen is looking forward to a successful fifth season with the Golden Bears. He grew up in the east end of Toronto, Ontario, where he played high school and junior hockey. Coach Hoogeveen played varsity hockey at BGSU in its inaugural three years, and earned a bachelor’s in political science and geography. He went on to obtain a master’s in city and regional planning at OSU.
For the past 20 years, Coach Hoogeveen has coached hockey at the youth level in Columbus as well as worked with adults and children teaching the basics of the game at the OSU Ice Rink. In addition, he has coached high school hockey at Gahanna and Olentangy Liberty, taking Liberty to three district championships and four conference titles.
Jack is retired from The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency where he worked for 33 years and resides in Westerville.
Mac Lawless - Varsity Assistant Coach
Mac grew up in Perrysburg, OH and attended the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. He began playing hockey when he was 8 years old and started coaching when his children were involved in youth hockey. He and his wife, Arien, have three children that graduated from Upper Arlington in 2018, 2020, and 2022.
Mac is the President of Corporate Housing Systems in Dublin, OH.
John Driscoll - Junior Varsity Head Coach
John graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from The Ohio State University. Raised by parents from Philadelphia and Chicago, John has been involved in the sport of hockey from a very young age. He played high school hockey at Cincinnati St. Xavier, where he also began coaching, volunteering at youth camps and clinics around Cincinnati. John also spent two summers as a counselor and coach at Miami Hockey School. John had previously been an assistant coach with UA Hockey since 2020.
Stephen Stern - Junior Varsity Assistant Coach
Assistant Coach Stephen Stern is returning for his 10th season with the Golden Bear’s hockey program. He served as a volunteer coach during his first two seasons with Upper Arlington Varsity and has been with the Junior Varsity for the last 7 seasons. Coach Stern has coached hockey in central Ohio for several years in various capacities, as well as officiating youth hockey, high school, college and adult games since 2013. He currently serves as the Director of Education of 614 Ice Refs in Central Ohio.
Coach Stern is a member of the Upper Arlington High School Chemistry Department and has taught in Upper Arlington for the past 27 years. He is in the 34th year of his teaching career.
Coach Stern is a proud graduate of the University of California, Irvine.
Owen Rose - Junior Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Rose is from Powell, Ohio and a 2018 graduate from Olentangy Liberty High School where he played baseball and hockey. He began playing hockey at age 5 and has played goalie since he was 8 years old. Coach Rose has worked at UAHS in various roles the last four years and has coached baseball for the last five years. He recently completed a degree in Special Education in the Spring of 2024.
